Kamaaduel is a silly place

Short story from October 16th

On the 5th day of the Mars lunar calendar, Kazzur, King of the Martians in Exile, gathered his royal knights for a great feast in remembrance of their ancient lineage from beyond the great Rock Belt. As the feast began, some told stories; others spoke of the sorrows of exile, as well as the blessings. For the knights were few, having many deserted the King after the betrayal of knight Nigorco the Water, but those who remained were honourable and true. And so, at the feast’s conclusion, the King betook to request the aid of his knights once again. A difficult task he had for them; a vision he had seen from the his latest travels to the abode of the witches of the deep mines. Their holographic projector showed to the King the halls of Phobos laid bare; an empty throne. Further still a great crash was foretold for Deimos; King Panos the Collector and his undertaking were to meet the System, and the System shall rend the board of management asunder for the Kings misgivings. If the King could travel to Deimos and fix the misgivings of King Panos then he would support the King’s claim for the throne of Phobos, allowing the Martian King to regain a token of the legitimacy he once held.
The knights Ofthwen, Andromeda, Xyl-brd were called up for their shrewdness and to undertake the travel to Deimos. Preceding such a journey, a voyage machine was required by the knights, and since the great betrayal and loss of the knights’ status, their access to the market was withheld. None wished to further tarnish the name of the king by circumventing the System and acquiring the vessel from the dealers who did not tabulate. That is, except for knight Vaneilour, who offered to tarnish his credit rating in the name of the King. He set out at once, to the lower depths of Mars where the System did not oversee as strongly. On the 3rd level he exchanged his galaxial axe for ethereal Martian currency, a currency not on the main trade stands. It was a dark currency, that if one was found in possession of, would have one’s assets taxed by over nine percent. On the 9th level he met the master of the black market. An trade was made and Vaneilour had in his possession a vessel sturdy enough to take the knights to Deimos. It was not fit for a king; but a king in exile in suited well.
Upon his return the other knights greeted him warmly; his king offering him a future tax cut. They named the vessel Zanzibar, The East Wind; and at once the knights set off, for they had little time before the rotations reached the next lunar period. Making moonfall on Deimos, the knights dawned their metal suits of atmospheric vapour, and made a prayer to the One of Many. King Panos and his undertaking had been improperly recording things that are given; things have now gone awry, the System will collect the records and it will be shown to Investors from beyond the great Rock Belt that King Panos was a knave of low character. Knight Andromeda, the largest of knights, approached King Panos and challenged his Board of Management to single combat; whereupon his victory, King Panos shall appoint the knights Ofthwen and Xly-brd as the new overseers of his undertaking; and upon threat of twenty percent tax rate for the next seven years for improper care of records, swear to support King Kazzur as the rightful heir to the throne of Phobos. King Panos accepted knight Andromeda’s challenge and called forth his Board of Managers, where in single combat he slew all 8 overseers. King Panos yielded and gave support for Andromeda’s king.
The King rested the crown of Phobos on his head and proclaimed himself: King in Exile No More, Yet the Right Honourable Lord of Phobos, The Land of Tax Breaks. The knights Ofthwen and Xly-brd managed their new roles with utmost honour and respect. The visit from the System was met with little trouble; the records of King Panos’ undertaking having been restored to good standing. For his troubles, knight Vaneilour was given a small fief on a land in the great Rock Belt; and there, he enjoyed a tax cut granted to him by his King; but the loss of his galaxial axe lay like an open wound in his heart for the rest of his lunar cycles.
